Every country has a holiday to honor mothers, motherhood, and their influence on society. The most common day for this celebration is the second Sunday in May.

The idea to have a holiday just for celebrating mothers comes from many sources. Long ago, there were ancient events that included honoring women and mothers. However, it was the influence of women in the US that really set the stage for this holiday. The modern American holiday of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial (紀(jì)念儀式) for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia. Her campaign to make “Mother’s Day” a recognized holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her beloved mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died. Anna’s mother was a peace activist who had cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the Civil War and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. Anna was the first to fight for Mother’s Day becoming an official holiday. She finally succeeded in 1914.

Celebrating Mother’s Day is just as varied as the date when it is held. In China, it is just starting to gain popularity. Carnations (康乃馨) are a very popular Mother’s Day gift and the most sold flowers in relation to the day. Mother’s Day in Canada typically involves small celebrations and gift-giving to one’s mother, grandmother, or other important female figures in one’s family. In Bangladesh, the whole country centers around mothers. Specially themed TV shows, news reports, and gatherings are organized. In the old days in France, mothers of large families were given medals. Nowadays, most Mother’s Day celebrations include gift-giving. Homemade cards, flower arrangements, and handmade gifts are popular choices. So is giving mothers a day off to go to a spa or salon. Restaurants are also very busy at this time, as mothers are treated to special nights out. No matter how Mother’s Day is spent, the need to recognize the person who brought you into this world is something everyone agrees on.

5月的第二個(gè)星期日是母親節(jié),，世界各地都舉行慶�,；顒�(dòng)，以頌揚(yáng)母愛的偉大,。

或許你不知道,，母親節(jié)的倡議起源于美國西弗吉尼亞州嘉芙頓城的一家主日學(xué)校。

1876年,，美國還在悲悼南北戰(zhàn)爭的死者,。安娜▪查維斯夫人（Anna Jarvis）在禮拜堂講授美國國殤紀(jì)念日的課程，講到戰(zhàn)役中捐軀的英雄故事時(shí),，她進(jìn)行祈禱說：“但愿在某處,、某時(shí)，會(huì)有人創(chuàng)立一個(gè)母親節(jié),，紀(jì)念和贊揚(yáng)美國與全世界的母親,�,！�

查維斯夫人為她的禮拜堂服務(wù)超過25年,。當(dāng)她在72歲逝世時(shí)，41歲的女兒安娜,，立志創(chuàng)立一個(gè)母親節(jié),，來實(shí)現(xiàn)母親多年前祈求的心愿。安娜先后寫信給許多有名望的人物,，要求他們支持設(shè)立母親節(jié),，以發(fā)揚(yáng)孝道，初時(shí)反應(yīng)冷淡,，但她不氣餒,，繼續(xù)向各界呼吁。

1907年5月12日,，安德烈衛(wèi)理教堂應(yīng)安娜之邀為母親們舉行一個(gè)禮拜儀式,。隔年，此儀式在費(fèi)城舉行,，反應(yīng)熱烈,，終于獲得維州州長支持，并于1910年宣布在該州設(shè)立母親節(jié),。

接著,，美國多個(gè)州和加拿大、墨西哥等先后對母親節(jié)給予認(rèn)可,，舉行慶祝儀式,。到了1914年，美國總統(tǒng)威爾遜提請國會(huì)通過決議案，將母親節(jié)定為全美國的節(jié)日,，并促請人們“公開表示我們對母親的敬愛”,。世界各地相繼仿效，遂成為“國際母親節(jié)”,。

安娜原建議以她母親的逝世日5月10日作為母親節(jié)的日期,，但后為方便人們共敘天倫，便選定在五月份的第二個(gè)星期日為母親節(jié),。
